Bluewater Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s most visited retail destinations with over 27 million annual visitors, tasked Trojan Lighting Solutions with using their retrofit lighting services to modernise 57 of its iconic lighthouse luminaires along Thames Walk. These eight-foot high pillars, integral to the centre’s architectural identity since its opening in 1999, were originally equipped with inefficient fluorescent lamps. The challenge was to retrofit these fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs, preserving their original aesthetic while ensuring minimal disruption to the busy shopping environment.
Trojan Lighting Solutions approached the project with a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and preserving Bluewater’s architectural integrity. After an in-depth assessment of the lighthouses’ structure, wiring, and connectivity, we designed a bespoke retrofit solution that maintained the external design while modernising the internal components.
We engineered new metal housings and gear trays to fit advanced LED boards, drivers, and Tridonic control systems, delivering a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. This upgrade reduced energy consumption by 59%, cutting the wattage from 91W to 37W per fixture. By focusing on circular economy principles, we minimised waste and future maintenance needs, utilising backward-compatible Tridonic components to support easy future upgrades and EU regulation compliance.
The DALI-based lighting controls installed by Trojan enable centralised, smart management of the entire lighting system, allowing for demand-driven, energy-efficient operation. This system supports an impressive annual energy saving of 1.3 million kWh, significantly reducing Bluewater’s carbon footprint.
By combining modern technology with minimal disruption, Trojan preserved the iconic look of Bluewater’s lighthouses while aligning with the centre’s sustainability goals. Our retrofit lighting work reflects our ongoing dedication to sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility, delivering a solution that enhances energy efficiency without compromising on design.
