St Thomas’ Hospital

Trojan Lighting Solutions played a pivotal role in a healthcare lighting project at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. The project involved reconditioning ageing fluorescent luminaires on-site and upgrading them with energy-efficient LED gear trays, Tridonic controls and intelligent Mymesh nodes. This retrofit solution allowed the NHS Trust to modernise its lighting system without disrupting patient care.

The primary reason for preserving the existing luminaires was to avoid disturbing the hospital’s metal-integrated ceiling, which would have caused significant disruption to patients in the wards. Engineering site lead David Crane noted that the sustainability aspect of reusing the lights was initially a secondary benefit. The focus was to maintain the infrastructure while improving functionality.

A key motivation behind the upgrade was to automate emergency lighting testing and reporting, a process that had been taking up the time of two full-time members of the facilities team. By implementing the wireless Mymesh system, the Trust could eliminate the need for manual testing, streamlining operations while improving energy efficiency.

One of the challenges encountered was ensuring the new technology would not interfere with sensitive clinical equipment. The hospital’s medical physics team expressed initial concerns about potential radio-frequency interference. However, after extensive trials, the Mymesh system was approved for use, clearing the way for its implementation across the site.

Trojan’s solution didn’t just provide energy savings. The integration of Mymesh nodes gave the Trust greater control over the healthcare lighting system. The new intelligent luminaires were linked to occupancy sensors, allowing the lights to dim or switch off in response to room usage, contributing to energy efficiency without compromising on safety.

The success of the project has led to further rollouts of the Mymesh system across the St Thomas’ site, with future plans to expand the technology to Guy’s Hospital, another facility within the NHS Trust. This project underscores the flexibility and sustainability of Trojan’s lighting solutions, offering a scalable and environmentally responsible approach to modern lighting upgrades in healthcare environments.
