Trojan Lighting Solutions is proud to have partnered with Bluewater Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s busiest retail destinations, attracting over 27 million visitors annually. Managed by Landsec, Bluewater is committed to maintaining its architectural integrity while pushing forward on sustainability efforts. As part of this mission, the centre’s management tasked Trojan Lighting with modernising 57 iconic lighthouses in the main Thames Walk, which have been central to the centre’s design since its opening in 1999.
These eight-foot-high pillars, made of wood, metal, and luminaires, were originally fitted with inefficient fluorescent lamps. Our challenge was to upgrade these fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs while preserving their aesthetic and minimising disruption.
Trojan’s approach began with a comprehensive assessment of the lighthouse structures, wiring, and connectivity. This detailed evaluation allowed us to create a bespoke solution that modernised the internal components while ensuring the exterior appearance and lighting effect remained true to the original design.
We engineered new metal housings and gear trays to house advanced LED boards, drivers, and Tridonic control systems. This upgrade reduced each fixture’s energy consumption by 59%, cutting power use from 91W to 37W. The new LED components are designed to last up to 100,000 hours, significantly reducing maintenance needs and aligning with circular economy principles. The use of backward-compatible Tridonic components ensures easy upgrades and compliance with EU regulations, supporting Bluewater’s sustainability goals.
Additionally, the installation of DALI-based lighting controls allows for smart, centralised management of the system, enabling energy-efficient, demand-driven operation. This system will save an estimated 1.3 million kWh annually, reinforcing Bluewater’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
At Trojan Lighting, we are committed to providing innovative and sustainable solutions that support the long-term goals of our clients. This project shows our dedication to environmental responsibility, helping Bluewater reduce its energy consumption while preserving its iconic design.
