Carpark lighting at Westquay by Trojan Lighting Solutions

Westquay Shopping Centre

Westquay Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s largest retail destinations, is undertaking a major lighting upgrade to its back-of-house and car park areas. The existing fluorescent fittings are energy-hungry and demand frequent maintenance. A central battery emergency lighting system also adds significant resource requirements to stay compliant.

Westquay’s goal is not only to reduce energy and maintenance costs but also to implement a future-proof solution that integrates with wider smart building strategies.

Trojan Lighting is supplying over 4,500 luminaires for the project, delivered in partnership with GA Harpers and BCG at the Hammerson-owned, JLL-managed property.

The new lighting design includes:

  • Integral self-test emergency fittings which will remove reliance on the central battery system.
  • Dimmable drivers with presence and daylight detection reducing energy use by ensuring lighting operates only when needed.
  • Mymesh controls giving building managers live insights into usage, compliance reporting and system performance.

Once complete, the installation is expected to halve lighting energy use while significantly reducing ongoing maintenance.

A World First

This project is also the first in the world to deploy the new Mymesh Ready Tridonic driver. By embedding Mymesh software directly into the LED driver, there is no need for separate control nodes, reducing hardware and production costs while simplifying installation. Crucially, it also eliminates the extra plastic housings and components that would normally be required, aligning the project with circular economy principles and helping to further reduce environmental impact.

The innovation forms part of Tridonic’s Wireless Solution Cooperation, which brings together software innovators and hardware specialists to accelerate the development of market-ready solutions.

The Mymesh Ready system will provide a secure, scalable wireless backbone that:

  • Unlocks real-time data insights
  • Connects with existing Building Management Systems
  • Supports compliance, occupancy monitoring, climate control and indoor air quality data

When completed, Westquay will benefit from a lighting system that is not only energy-efficient but also smart-building ready. The upgrade will cut energy and maintenance costs, streamline compliance, and lay the foundation for a more sustainable, connected retail environment.
