Trojan Lighting Featured in Energy In Buildings & Industry Magazine

An article by our MD, Anthony Barrow, has been featured in the February issue of Energy in Buildings & Industry magazine.

In the special Lighting & Control Systems feature, Anthony explores how intelligent lighting design is delivering measurable performance improvements across offices, education, retail and healthcare environments.

The article highlights a key shift in the market. While LED technology is now well established, the greatest gains are increasingly achieved through intelligent controls, thoughtful design, and a clear understanding of how buildings are actually used.

Across the feature, Anthony references live project examples including:

  • An 81% reduction in lighting energy consumption at Kellanova’s HQ in MediaCity through presence detection, daylight harvesting and zoning.

  • Intelligent emergency lighting solutions at Newcastle City Library, incorporating self-testing, LiFePO₄ battery technology and automated reporting to support BS 5266 compliance.

  • Large-scale wireless lighting deployment at Westquay Shopping Centre, supplying over 4,500 luminaires and embedding control functionality directly within the driver to reduce hardware and simplify installation.

  • Healthcare upgrades at St Thomas’ Hospital, where wireless control and remote firmware updates reduced disruption in critical clinical environments.

The article also outlines how wireless mesh-based systems, DALI-compatible drivers, automated emergency testing and remote diagnostics are helping estates teams reduce maintenance while improving compliance and energy performance.

As buildings become increasingly connected, Anthony explains how lighting networks are evolving into a foundation for wider smart building strategies, providing real-time data on occupancy, energy use and system health.

The full feature, Intelligent Lighting Use Across Sectors, appears in the February issue of Energy in Buildings & Industry.
