We have been featured in the latest edition of Healthcare Matters, sharing our perspective on the evolving role of lighting within modern hospital estates. The article explores how intelligent lighting is becoming an integral part of building infrastructure, supporting patient wellbeing, staff performance and the day-to-day operation of hospitals.
The feature explains why lighting should no longer be viewed simply as a building service. As healthcare environments become increasingly connected, lighting systems are helping estates and facilities teams improve operational efficiency, simplify compliance and create environments that better support both patients and clinical staff.
The article examines how guidance including CIBSE LG2: Lighting for Healthcare Premises, HTM 06-01 and the updated BS 5266-1:2025 is influencing lighting design. It highlights the growing importance of considering staff wellbeing through tunable lighting, creating comfortable environments for patients, and using intelligent controls to balance the different activities that take place across a hospital throughout the day and night.
It also looks at how modern intelligent lighting systems are helping healthcare estates manage compliance more efficiently. Automated emergency lighting testing, wireless monitoring and real-time reporting are reducing the administrative burden on estates teams while providing a clear audit trail and improved visibility of system performance.
Drawing on our experience delivering projects at Guy’s & St Thomas‘, Lewisham Hospital and Peterborough City Hospital, the feature demonstrates how intelligent lighting can be successfully implemented within live clinical environments, combining efficient LED technology, integrated emergency systems and connected controls to improve both building performance and the experience of the people using it.
