Bullring Shopping Centre

Trojan Lighting designed and supplied a full LED and Mymesh wireless lighting upgrade for the back-of-house areas at Bullring, Birmingham, one of the UK’s largest shopping and leisure destinations. The scheme covers service corridors, plant rooms, high-bay storage and loading areas, stairwells and escape routes, and staff and amenity spaces.

A single wireless network across a mixed estate

Back-of-house at a site like the Bullring isn’t one type of space, it’s dozens of different ones including corridors, plant rooms, loading bays, stairwells and staff areas, each with different ceiling heights, occupancy patterns and safety requirements. Trojan Lighting supplied a Mymesh solution, a wireless mesh control system where every fitting talks to its neighbours rather than to a separate wired control loop.

  • No dedicated control cabling to install, test or maintain
  • Proven at car park and shopping centre scale
  • Network reach grows with the number of fittings
  • Occupancy-based dimming, area by area

That single network is what let such a varied mix of areas be controlled the same way. Corridors and plant rooms sit at a low background level until someone’s detected, then step up to full output with the same dynamic dimming used in the high-bay storage and loading areas, just tuned to a taller, more open space. It’s this occupancy-based dimming, area by area, rather than lighting run at full output on a timer, that accounts for most of the energy saving in the scheme.

Emergency provision designed in

The same network carries the emergency lighting. Emergency fittings self-test on schedule and report their status back over the mesh, rather than relying on someone walking the estate with a test key so faults surface automatically instead of waiting for the next manual check.

That decision matters a lot in the high-bay areas, where adding a sensor later would mean scaffold or a mobile elevated work platform. Because every fitting already sits on the same mesh, specifying it up front was a configuration choice rather than a wiring one and it removes that future access cost entirely.

An 88% cut in lighting energy use, paying back in under two and a half years, with the whole back-of-house estate now running on a single wireless control network that’s already emergency-sensor-ready throughout.
