Peterborough City Hospital was awarded funding from the NHS National Energy Efficiency Fund to become a more energy-efficient building. The project aim was to switch light fittings from across the etstate from fluorescent to LED with the goals of cutting energy use, lowering carbon emissions and reducing ongoing maintenance costs.
The Trust required a fast-track programme to meet funding deadlines and avoid disruption to patient care. The hospital estate contained more than 19,000 fittings across wards, circulation areas, and plant spaces. The solution needed to:
Meet strict NHS lighting standards including BS5266 compliance for emergency lighting.
Deliver significant energy savings with a strong ROI case to satisfy funding requirements.
Minimise installation complexity for contractors working in live clinical environments.
Provide Facilities Managers with easy-to-monitor systems that reduce ongoing workload.
What We Did
Working in partnership with Mymesh and in collaboration with contractor Multiplex and installer GA Harpers, we developed a solution tailored to healthcare. The focus was on speed, compliance and creating long-term value for the Trust. For the project we:
Produced a full lighting design and lux survey to NHS standards, including layouts and controls integration.
Manufactured and supplied over 19,000 luminaires and controls within just six weeks, with phased delivery to support on-site project managers.
Integrated Mymesh wireless controls, creating an intelligent backbone for compliance reporting, energy monitoring, and future smart building upgrades.
Supported installers with detailed datasheets, commissioning guidance and technical support, ensuring smooth delivery in a complex environment.
Products Supplied
A wide range of our luminaires were selected to suit the different requirements across the hospital, from patient rooms and wards to plant areas and circulation spaces.
Evesham Bulkheads – Durable, impact-resistant bulkheads with Tridonic LED boards for high efficiency. Options include corridor function and LiFePO₄ emergency, making them ideal for hospital circulation areas.
Ashhurst Downlights – Premium-grade IP54 downlights designed for healthcare and circulation spaces. With multiple CCT options, long life, and dimmable or emergency versions, they deliver reliable, low-glare lighting across hospital environments
Essington Bedheads – Anti-ligature fittings with bi-directional light, IP54 rating, and low-glare opal diffusers. Ideal for wards and patient rooms, they combine safety with comfortable illumination and dual control options.
Grimrods – Robust IP66/IK08 linear fittings with GRP body and polycarbonate diffuser, delivering up to 152lm/W and 100,000-hour life. Their durability, efficiency, and emergency or wireless options make them ideal for hospital plant rooms and service areas.
Lowcroft – TPa-rated, LG7-compliant LED panels with low-glare microprismatic diffusers. Energy-efficient, flicker-free, and long-life, they are ideal for clean rooms and healthcare spaces requiring consistent, comfortable lighting.
Ludlow – TPa-rated, LG7-compliant modular panels with low-glare diffusers, designed for shallow ceiling voids. Energy-efficient and long-life, they suit healthcare environments needing reliable, compliant lighting with minimal maintenance.
Waldron – IP44-rated, TP(a) low-glare fittings designed to DHSS guidelines. With multiple CCT options and tamper-proof features, they provide safe, reliable illumination for healthcare environments.
Wheatlea – LG7-compliant linear luminaires with low-glare diffusers, available as direct or direct/indirect. Long-life and efficient, they can be surface mounted or suspended, making them ideal for large healthcare spaces.
